Privacy policy
Last updated 20 October 2026. We keep this short and plain.
The short version
- The OtterTap app has no accounts and doesn't collect any information about you. It connects to ottertap.com only to fetch the sponsor banner, as described in section 1.
- Your profiles and screenshots stay on your own computer.
- This website collects only what it needs to work, and what you choose to send us through the contact form.
- We don't sell your information.
1. The OtterTap app
OtterTap saves your profiles (settings, notes and the pictures you capture for screen triggers) in a folder on your computer, %AppData%\OtterTap. We never receive them. When you capture a screenshot for a trigger, it is saved only in that folder.
The sponsor banner
The free version shows a small banner at the bottom of the window. To do that, the app asks ottertap.com for a small file that lists the current sponsor and, if there is one, for the banner picture. It keeps a copy on your computer and asks again when you start the app, at most about once every 12 hours. These are ordinary web requests, so our web host sees your IP address and the app's name and version, like any website visit. The app sends nothing about you, your profiles or your screen, and there are no accounts, cookies or advertising IDs.
If you click the banner, the link goes through a page on ottertap.com that counts the click and then sends you to the sponsor's website. From that point the sponsor's own privacy policy applies.
The paid upgrade
If you buy the one-off upgrade, you receive a licence key and paste it into the app. The key is checked on your computer and is never sent anywhere. Payment is handled by an independent payment provider, who receives your payment details; we don't see them. We'll name the provider here before the upgrade goes on sale.
2. The website
Server logs
Like most websites, our web host records basic technical details of each visit, such as your IP address, browser type and the pages you request. This is used to keep the site running securely.
Contact form and email
If you contact us, we receive your name, email address and message. We use them only to reply to you. The form is processed by a third-party form service that passes your message to our email, and may use a captcha service to block spam. If you email us directly, we receive the email in the normal way. We keep messages as long as we need to deal with your request, and you can ask us to delete them.
Analytics
We may use Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages are useful. It uses cookies and collects information such as your approximate location, device and the pages you view, in a form that doesn't identify you to us. You can block it with your browser settings or a privacy extension. If we turn analytics on, it's described here.
3. Cookies
The website doesn't set cookies of its own. Analytics, if enabled, may set cookies as described above.
4. Who we share information with
Only the services that help us run the website and contact form: our web host, the contact form and captcha services, and analytics if enabled. They handle information on our behalf. We don't sell or rent your information, and we don't use it to show you advertising.
5. Children
OtterTap is used by many young people. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The app collects none. If you're under 13, please don't send us your name or email address through the website. Ask a parent or guardian to contact us for you. If you think a child has sent us personal information, tell us and we'll delete it.
6. Security
The website is served over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we hold to a minimum, which limits what could ever be lost.
7. Your choices
You can ask us what information we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or ask us to stop contacting you. Email info@ottertap.com or use the contact page.
8. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant (for example, if the app starts sending information over the internet), we'll say so clearly on this site and in the app.
